With increasing energy consumption and global climate change, the role of low-carbon energy is hard to overestimate. Clean energy is one of the goals that make up the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The advantages of nuclear energy can and should be used to achieve this goal.

Nuclear energy is devoid of greenhouse gas emissions and does not burn oxygen in the process of electricity generation, unlike fossil fuels. The regions of nuclear facilities location are growing into development centers of science, education, medicine, culture, and art. Nuclear power plants’ reliability and their high safety level are ensured by modern technologies, highly qualified personnel and their safety culture, compliance with the stringent IAEA safety standards at all stages of the life cycle—from the construction to decommissioning.

Today, many countries are changing their attitude towards nuclear generation and launching national plans for adopting or further developing nuclear energy.

The Forum has been organized in Russia by the Public Council of the State Atomic Energy Corporation “Rosatom” for 12 years and has become a major platform for the nuclear industry specialists, government agencies, experts, environmental specialists, and public representatives to discuss the issues and exchange best practices concerning safe development of nuclear power technologies.

In 2019, the Public Forum-Dialogue and Exhibition “AtomEco-2019” will be held abroad— in Hungary—for the first time. And there were good reasons for choosing the venue. The cooperation between Russia and Hungary in the atomic project implementation goes back decades. The Paks NPP, which was built according to a Soviet project, produces more than 40% of electricity in Hungary. In 2014, Russia and Hungary signed an agreement on the construction of two new power units. And earlier this year, the building of a construction base at the Paks-2 NPP site was launched. Russian and Hungarian NPPs’ sites have gained a lot of successful experience in the field of economy, culture, and education.

The Forum will be held in the unique historical city of Pécs which was awarded the title of the cultural capital of Hungary; its architectural monuments are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The Agenda of the Forum includes a plenary session, thematic sessions and roundtables, technical tours at the Paks NPP and Bátaapáti radioactive waste disposal.

The main topics for discussion are as follows:

• Nuclear industry technologies for sustainable development of humanity
• Society on the path to low-carbon energy: knowledge, relevance, technologies
• Safety at all stages of the nuclear fuel cycle
• New nuclear technologies — discoveries that change lives
• Russian new generation NPPs: key safety aspects, operating experience, technological groundwork 
• Nuclear energy and society — dialogue on a new level
• Nuclear facilities areas economic development based on the multiplicative effect.

The Forum will bring together more than 300 delegates from countries developing nuclear energy industry. Representatives of the following groups and agencies are invited to participate:

• publicauthorities;
• nuclear industry enterprises;
• local and regional authorities of the territories where nuclear enterprises are located;
• stakeholders from public and environmental organizations;
• international organizations (IAEA, OECD NEA, WNA);
• academia and experts;
• mass media.

Working languages of the Forum are English, Russian, and Hungarian.
